Most cannabis is fed from a bottle. Living soil cannabis is grown a different way: instead of feeding the plant directly, you feed the soil, and a whole community of microbes, fungi and worms feeds the plant in return. It is one of the oldest ways to grow, and it is the foundation of how we grow at Burning Rope Pharms. This guide explains what living soil is, how it works, and how to start your own.
What Is Living Soil Cannabis?
Living soil is a growing medium full of biology. Alongside minerals and organic matter, it holds bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes, earthworms and other organisms that break organic material down into forms plant roots can absorb. Growing living soil cannabis means relying on that ecosystem, rather than synthetic salt fertilizers, to supply nutrients.
In a conventional grow, the grower mixes nutrients into water and delivers them on a schedule. In living soil, the job changes: build healthy soil, keep it moist and covered, and let the biology do the feeding. Many living soil growers water with plain water for most of the grow.
How the Soil Food Web Feeds Your Plants
Scientists call this network of organisms the soil food web. Each part plays a role:
- Bacteria and fungi break down organic matter and hold nutrients in their own bodies.
- Protozoa and nematodes eat those microbes and release nutrients near the roots in forms the plant can use.
- Mycorrhizal fungi partner with roots, extending their reach for water and nutrients such as phosphorus in exchange for sugars from the plant.
- Earthworms mix and aerate the soil and leave behind castings rich in nutrients and microbial life.
The plant takes part too. Its roots release sugars and other compounds that feed the microbes around them, so the plant helps shape the very community that feeds it.
Living Soil vs Bottled Nutrients
| Living Soil | Bottled Nutrients | |
|---|---|---|
| How plants are fed | Soil biology releases nutrients gradually | Grower delivers nutrients directly |
| Setup | Soil is built and rested before planting | Quick to start |
| Day to day | Mostly water, occasional top-dressing | Mixing and measuring each feed |
| Control | Less precise, more forgiving | Very precise, less forgiving of mistakes |
| Reuse | Soil improves and can be reused | Medium is usually replaced |
Neither approach is wrong, and skilled growers produce excellent flower both ways. We choose living soil because it suits how we work: slow, patient and focused on flavour. Many growers, us included, find it brings out a fuller aroma, which is a big part of why we care so much about cannabis terpenes.
How to Build a Basic Living Soil Mix
Recipes vary, but most start from the same three building blocks:
- Base: sphagnum peat moss or coco coir for structure and water holding.
- Aeration: perlite, pumice or rice hulls so roots can breathe and water drains freely.
- Compost: quality compost and earthworm castings to bring in nutrients and biology.
A common starting point is roughly equal parts of each. Growers then add slow-release organic amendments such as kelp meal, neem or crustacean meal, rock dust and gypsum. Follow the guidance on whichever amendments you buy, since strength varies by product.
Once mixed, moisten the soil and let it rest for a few weeks before planting. This cooking period gives the biology time to start breaking the amendments down, so nutrients are ready when your plants need them.

Caring for Living Soil Cannabis
- Keep it moist, not soaked. Soil life needs water and air. Soggy soil suffocates it, and bone-dry soil sends it dormant.
- Keep it covered. A mulch of straw or dry leaves, or a cover crop such as clover, holds moisture in and shelters the surface.
- Feed the soil, not the plant. Top-dress with compost, castings or amendments instead of pouring in liquid nutrients.
- Avoid what kills the biology. Synthetic salt nutrients, harsh sterilisers and chlorinated tap water can all harm soil life. Filtered or dechlorinated water is safest.
- Don’t throw it away. Living soil gets better with age. Leave the old root ball in place, top up with fresh compost and amendments, and replant. This no-till approach keeps the soil structure and its fungal networks intact.
Is Living Soil Right for You?
It is a great fit if you want a forgiving grow with less mixing and measuring, care about aroma and flavour, and are happy to reuse large containers or beds.
Consider another route if you need the fastest possible start, very light containers, or precise control over every feed.
Living soil works with every seed type. Autoflowers in particular benefit from soil that is ready from day one, because they have little time to recover from setbacks. Our guide to feminized vs autoflower seeds explains the differences, and our germination guide covers getting seeds started.
Why We Grow in Living Soil
Living soil is one part of how we work. We pair it with a slow, cold cure, select our keepers through pheno hunting, and judge the results the old-fashioned way: by aroma, flavour and a clean white ash. It takes longer. We think the jar shows it.

A Note on Legality
Laws on buying, possessing and growing cannabis and cannabis seeds differ widely between countries and regions. Always check and follow the laws that apply where you live.
